Cutting Waste, Saving Money: 'Mint Meals Minus Waste’

22/01/2026

“A group of people standing together inside a greenhouse, with two individuals holding a large basket filled with freshly harvested vegetables. A table in front of them is covered with a yellow cloth and displays various vegetables and food items. Gardening and cooking equipment can be seen in the background.”
‘Mint Meals Minus Waste’ is an exciting new project from Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire and Merseyside, delivered in partnership with South Liverpool Homes and our community shop, The Market Place.

Together, we’re on a mission to help local households cut down on food waste. The project will support local people to make the most of the food they buy, save money, and take small steps that make a big difference for the planet.

This project is all about taking a hands‑on, community-first approach to helping you build their food skills. The aim? To cut down on household food waste across south Liverpool by showing just how much it affects both our wallets and the planet. And by sharing simple, sustainable habits that anyone can adopt.

Residents will be able to get involved in a whole mix of fun and practical activities at Grow Speke and The Market Place. Workshops and resources will cover things like:

  • How to shop smart and plan meals that really work for you
  • The best ways to store food and what date labels actually mean
  • Cooking healthy meals and understanding portion sizes
  • Creative ways to make leftovers go further, with monthly Cook and Eat sessions
  • Hands-on community composting workshops

And Grow Speke will also be home to a brand‑new community fridge, helping to share surplus food locally and make sure good food never goes to waste.

For more information about the project and to find out how you can get involved, keep an eye on the South Liverpool Homes and Grow Speke social media channels.

An adult and two children sit at an outdoor wooden table covered with art supplies, including paint bottles, brushes, paper, and a cup of water. The group appears to be engaged in a painting activity, with colorful paints arranged neatly on the table. In the background, there are traffic cones, fencing, and a stroller, suggesting the setting is an open community space or garden area.
