Moving out soon? Let's make it a smooth process.

Make sure you’ve ticked off the essentials like giving notice, clearing your rent balance, returning keys, and leaving the property clean and damage-free.

How much notice do I need to give?

You must give us four weeks’ notice that you are leaving – the last day should be a Sunday, however, you can still arrange for us to collect the keys from you or you can drop them off to us by 12 noon on the Monday after your tenancy ends. If you don’t give us this notice, you will still be charged four weeks’ rent after you have handed the keys in.

How do I give you notice?

Please let us know that you are leaving by getting in touch with us in the first instance. We will then ask you to complete a tenancy termination form, and your neighbourhood management officer will visit you within five working days to go through your next steps and help you end your tenancy successfully. At the end of the notice period we will arrange an appointment to collect the keys from you.

What do I do with anything I don't want?

It is important that you remove all your furniture and household items from your home before you hand the keys back to us. This includes clearing all lofts, outhouses and gardens .

If you don't leave your home in an acceptable condition you will be charged the cost we incur for doing this. We will identify anything that you will need to repair when the neighbourhood management officer visits you in your home.

If you need to dispose of any bulky items Liverpool City Council offers a collection service.

What if I still owe rent or other charges when I leave?

It is important that you clear your rent account before you move out. If you are unable to do this, you need to speak to us to make an agreement to repay the debt. If you don’t do this, we will pass your debt over to a debt collection agency which will pursue the money you owe us. We also ask that you provide a forwarding address. If you do leave owing us any rent or other charges you may find it difficult to find another home to rent. Your application for an SLH home will not be considered if you don’t clear your debts or set up a payment agreement.

What if I change my mind?

You need to contact us within the four week notice period. We will then make a decision whether or not we are able to withdraw your notice. Please note, you may have to sign a new tenancy agreement too.

Can SLH help you stay in your home?

Why are you moving and what can SLH do to help you stay in your home? There may be a number of reasons why you are choosing to move but it’s always worthwhile speaking to your neighbourhood management officer to see what they can do to help if you want to stay in your home.
