Work has officially started on the regeneration of Western Avenue/Hale Road in Speke, marking an exciting milestone for the local community.
The £3 million development by South Liverpool Homes (SLH), part funded by Homes England and being built by Tyson Construction, will feature a new Heron Foods retail unit alongside eight one-bedroom apartments specially designed for people over the age of 55.
The apartments, built for social rent, will adapt to the evolving needs of older residents with features such as level-access shower enclosures and lift access. Built to EPC A standards, the homes will be equipped with solar PV panels, energy-efficient heating and hot water systems, as well as electric vehicle charging points.
Adam Smith, South Liverpool Homes’ Director of Development, is delighted this project has got off the ground, saying, "The scheme will help with the regeneration of a prominent part of Speke and brings much-needed new homes to Speke, while addressing both local and national housing challenges.
“The addition of the retail unit offers greater choice for people living in the area, while the energy-efficient features will ensure that the development meets modern sustainability standards and caters to the long-term needs of its residents.”
Seen as a gateway location to Speke due to its proximity to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the development is expected to be completed by early 2026. It is part of South Liverpool Homes’ commitment to delivering 780 new homes across South Liverpool by 2032.
