Practice mindful movement during Mental Health Awareness Week
Published: 23 April 2024Â
Mental Health Awareness Week 2024 will take place from Monday 13 to Sunday 19 May and this year the theme is all about ‘Moving more for our mental health’.Â
One of the best things we can do for our mental health and wellbeing is to move more. Physical activity is any movement your body does as part of everyday activities, including picking the kids up from school, walking the dog or even cleaning!Â
When we are active it can help to reduce anxiety and stress and help you sleep better too. By starting small and choosing an activity that you enjoy, you have more chance of sticking to it.Â
We’ve partnered with a variety of our wellbeing providers to deliver a programme of activities for the week; keep reading to find out how you can get involved.Â
Monday 13 MayÂ
Based in The Market Place Social every Monday, Mind Connect CIC provides free wellbeing workshops. The sessions are a supportive and informal space to learn about different mental health topics, such as stress, anxiety or trauma, and new strategies to help.  Â
There will be two free sessions, focusing on low mood awareness. If you think you would benefit from taking part, come along to either the morning or afternoon session -Â Â Â
- 10.30am - 11.30am Â
- 2.30pm - 3.30pm  Â
Mindset Matters promote the benefits of improving mental health and wellbeing through physical activity. Â
They provide free weekly boxercise classes that are fun, encouraging and inclusive. It is held at ProFlex Gym, 4 Wood Street, Garston, L19 2LU every Monday between 8-9pm. Â
The classes can be adapted to all abilities and are suitable for all levels of fitness. Â
Thursday 16 MayÂ
Explore the benefits of movement by joining us for our weekly wellbeing walk. Walking is a great way to move in a way that works for you. Â
We meet every Thursday at 11am at Garston Children’s Centre, 70 Banks Road, for a stroll down to the coastal reserve. This is your opportunity to explore the benefits of nature on our doorstep and practice mindful movement. Â
Walks will be at a relaxed pace, and ideal for those new to walking. Please come dressed appropriately for the weather conditions. Â
Friday 17 May Â
Former professional England and Liverpool goalkeeper and mental health advocate, Chris Kirkland will be visiting our community garden to share his journey with addiction, his current recovery journey, and his mental health advocacy.Â
Join us from 11.30am, to hear Chris talk about these low moments and how he overcame them on his path to recovery. There will be free refreshments and why not give the Grow Speke gym a go too? Â
We have an assortment of outdoor fitness equipment, perfect for anyone looking for an alternative to a traditional indoor gym. Our friends at Groundwork Cheshire, Lancashire & Merseyside can give you a demo of the equipment before you get started. Â
