Become a volunteer with SLH!

Published: 28 September 2023Â Â
There are lots of fun and flexible ways to get involved and volunteer with us. Whatever your skills and interests, we’ll have a role to suit you. To become a volunteer all you need is enthusiasm and a desire to help. Â
You can choose how much time you give, and we’ll provide the training and support you need to make it happen. Plus, volunteering is a great way of meeting new people and taking a break from your daily routine.Â
Take a look at the ways you can get involved below:Â Â
At the heart of volunteering with SLH are three community projects; our urban garden, Grow Speke, our community shop The Market Place and our social hub, The Market Place Social. Take a look at what’s on offer and get some ideas about how you would like to get involved. Â
Volunteering at Grow SpekeÂ
We have a number of volunteer opportunities available at our community garden. From maintaining the site and the produce grown all year round to playing a vital role in making our seasonal events a success!Â
Event volunteerÂ
Event volunteering involves supporting Grow Speke before, during, and after any community events run throughout the year, including Christmas, Easter and bonfire night events. General activities include:Â
- StewardingÂ
- TidyingÂ
- CookingÂ
- CleaningÂ
- Visitor assistance Â
- Site safetyÂ
Gardening volunteerÂ
Your role as a volunteer gardener will include supporting Grow Speke staff, assisting with the maintenance of the site and looking after the plants grown at the community garden. General activities will include:Â Â
- PlantingÂ
- WeedingÂ
- WateringÂ
- ScrapingÂ
- Composting wasteÂ
Volunteering at The Market PlaceÂ
The project is about ‘more than just food’ - we aim to make the shop a friendly, accessible venue where you can find out about the range of services that SLH provides. There are lots of ways to contribute to our volunteer-run shop.  Â
Roles at The Market Place include:Â
- Opening up the shopÂ
- Controlling and managing stock levelsÂ
- Collecting and receiving stockÂ
- Serving in the shop and helping with queriesÂ
- Receiving deliveries and stocking shelvesÂ
Volunteering at The Market Place SocialÂ
Located behind our community shop, The Market Place Social is a place to chat, relax, create and connect. It’s a shared space that we use for a variety of activities, like Coffee & Chat to regular arts and crafts and wellbeing classes. Â
Roles at The Market Place Social include:Â
- Chat with workshop participants, in a group setting and on a one-to-one basisÂ
- Making tea, coffee and other refreshments. Washing up & putting away cups after sessionsÂ
- Assist staff to set-up room, plus pack-down and clean-up afterwardsÂ
Community litter picksÂ
We host a number of litter picks across Speke and Garston every year. Our volunteer litter pickers are a dedicated set of individuals who pride themselves on clearing our green spaces and pavements from litter and rubbish. We are extremely grateful for the hard work that they do.Â
We loan volunteers equipment to help with their litter pick activities. This includes litter pickers and rubbish bags. Â
We promote our litter pick events across our social media channels, so keep an eye out for more information. Â
