Get Involved with SLH - May 2022
Published: 11 May 2022
Can you believe it’s May already? This month we’ve got another bumper crop of opportunities for you to get involved with SLH and your local community.
If you’d like to be notified when the next Get Involved drops, make sure you subscribe to our Get Involved email newsletter.
But without further ado, let’s get into it and get involved.
Lights, camera, action! Meet our Get Involved stars!
We’re a social landlord that strives to be just that – social! We want our tenants to be involved and engaged with us, with each other, and with their communities. That’s why we’ve got a whole range of opportunities for tenants to get involved, from informal coffee mornings to board membership.
We met with just a few of the people who’ve chosen to get involved with SLH, to find out why and what they get out of it.
Meet Basir, who’s joined our tenant scrutiny panel to help influence the decisions we make.
Meet Nancy, who volunteers at Grow Speke to learn how to grow fresh fruit and vegetables while giving something back to the local community.
And there’s Syd, who spends his spare time volunteering at our community shop, The Market Place.
And finally, if all that sounds too committing, meet Diane and Etta, who pop along to our regular Coffee and Chat mornings, helping them break the cycle of isolation and get their mojo back.
Thanks to Basir, Nancy, Syd, Diane and Etta for stepping up and helping us spread the word!

Branch out with The Reader
If that’s whetted your appetite for all things natural, then you’ll love Branching Out, a new five-week wellbeing course that invites you to spend time connecting with the natural environment at The Reader’s home – Calderstones Park.
‘Branching Out’ is a series of weekly half-day workshops that take place from 16 June – 14 July from 10am-2pm. During the course you will help to uncover and record the stories and culture behind the trees in Calderstones Park. Transport and lunch will be provided.
Latest screening at The Coffee Vault
The Coffee Vault in Garston village is a great venue, serving up top-notch coffee and food to hungry and thirsty locals, but did you know that we’ve got our own film club going at the venue? The next showing is Thursday 26 May at 1pm, when we will be watching Will Ferrell in Anchorman – The Legend of Ron Burgundy!
Free refreshments will be provided.
Explore the historic villages of Liverpool
Join us for eight fascinating workshops where we will research online into the history of Liverpool's villages, visit each location and explore the area, while having the opportunity to get active, improve our wellbeing and meet new people.
The programme began last week at Speke Training and Education Centre (STEC) and runs each Thursday until 30 June, but it’s not too late to join!

Coffee and Chat
If courses aren’t your bag, we hear you. If you’re just looking for something informal and sociable, you’ve found your people.
Throughout the summer Coffee and Chat meets from 10:30 to 12noon at Grow Speke.
Get on Board
We’re on the hunt for more tenants to join our board. Could that be you?
Chances are you’ve never thought of joining the SLH board. Maybe you think it’s time-consuming, intimidating, irrelevant or plain boring? We’re looking for more tenants, more young people and more diversity to inject vitality into our board and help us make decisions that continue to be relevant to our communities.
