SLH pledges support to Liverpool’s Good Food Plan

Published: 10 November 2021

South Liverpool Homes (SLH) is proud to pledge support to Liverpool’s Good Food Plan by ensuring that residents of Speke and Garston can access healthy and nutritious food through our two flagship projects – Grow Speke and The Market Place.

Grow Speke is SLH’s community garden project in Speke which produces fresh, local vegetables as well as being a place where residents can come together, spend time outdoors and muck in with activities to ensure the garden flourishes. It is delivered by Groundwork with an ever-growing number of volunteers!

This produce is then donated to SLH’s community shop, The Market Place, supplementing food from FareShare and other sources, so that tenants can access healthy, low-cost food each week. There are currently over 1,000 SLH tenants signed up to The Market Place, where they can get £15 worth of groceries for just £3.00.

Our pledge is to continue to make these projects sustainable so that we can support Liverpool’s Good Food Plan vision of creating a city where everyone can access and eat good food.

According to charitable food alliance Feeding Liverpool who are co-ordinating the plan, 32% of adults in Liverpool are food insecure which means that they worry about putting food on the table to feed themselves and their families.

Meanwhile, an estimated 140,000 tonnes of food is wasted in Liverpool City each year, producing approximately 368,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year, the equivalent of the CO2 produced by 80,033 cars in one year.

Joe Cummings, SLH’s Community Investment Manager, is keen that these South Liverpool projects continue to align to the ethos of the Good Food Plan: “We are thrilled to be able to pledge our support to the Good Food Liverpool Plan. Their vision is to ensure everyone in the city can access good food by working in partnership with local organisations and involving residents in the process. And this is exactly what our projects aim to do.

“By working in partnership with Groundwork and food charity, FareShare, the projects are playing a key role to help combat food injustice in South Liverpool. They are also addressing the problem of food waste and increasing carbon emissions through an exciting composting project that’s currently in development. Any surplus food from The Market Place will be composted at Grow Speke at the end of each week and will delivered to community groups and interested tenants by cargo bike, helping to support SLH’s, and the city’s, net-zero target.”

The Good Food Plan delivers part of one of Liverpool City Council’s ‘Pandemic Pledges’, ‘Good Food, Warm Home’, announced in response to the Covid-19 pandemic as well as supporting Liverpool’s City Plan vision to create a ‘thriving sustainable, fair city for everyone’.
