Claim your free bin and get composting with Grow Speke!

Published: 15 March 2021

It’s Compost Week this week, which celebrates the benefits of composting and encourages the UK to be rotters! We’re doing our bit too, working with Grow Speke and Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) to help get South Liverpool composting.

Last week we met up with Justin from Grow Speke who gave us a lowdown on composting, from red tiger worms to the importance of alternating your greens and browns! Watch the video and all will be revealed.

But seriously, homes across Merseyside are producing over half a million tonnes of waste every year, much of which could be recycled. You could reduce this by a third by composting your organic waste.

Composting is nature’s way of recycling. By converting your kitchen and garden waste into compost you reduce the amount of material sent to landfill. You also cut the amount of methane and carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere – significant greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.

What can I compost?

It’s not all about grass cuttings and garden waste – there’s lots of stuff you can compost and they’re divided into greens and browns.

Greens

Tea bags, grass cuttings, vegetable peelings, old flowers, fruit scraps, nettles, coffee grounds & filter paper, spent bedding plants, comfrey leaves, rhubarb leaves, young annual weeds, pond algae & seaweed.

Browns

Egg shells, egg boxes, cereal boxes, corrugated cardboard packaging, newspaper, toilet & kitchen roll tubes, garden prunings, dry leaves, twigs, hedge clippings, straw & hay, bedding from vegetarian pets, wool, feathers, ashes from wood, paper or lumpwood charcoal, woody clippings, cotton threads, string (made from natural fibres), tumble dryer lint (from natural fibre clothes), old natural fibre clothes (e.g. woolly jumpers), vacuum bag contents, tissues, paper towels & napkins, shredded confidential documents, corn cobs & stalks, pine needles & cones.

Claim your free composting bin

Thanks to MRWA, Grow Speke has 10 composting bins to give away and start you on your composting journey. To claim yours, all you need to do is email cit@southliverpoolhomes.co.uk. Make sure you put ‘Compost bin’ in the subject line. But be quick, once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Good luck and get composting!
