Royal British Legion memorial move changed to 13 December

Published: 7 December 2020
South Liverpool Homes and the Royal Navy have rescheduled the move of the memorial at the former Royal British Legion club in Speke, to Sunday 13 December.
The memorial ceremony was moved from its original date of 4 October to 6 December, due to coronavirus restrictions. However, a further delay of a week was necessary due to uncertainty around tiered restrictions in Liverpool, after the second lockdown ended on 2 December.
This decision has been made in consultation with the families of the 119 ex-services personnel and members remembered at the memorial, with their health and safety, and that of the community, our number one priority.
The former Royal British Legion club on Dam Wood Road, Speke, is currently home to a garden of remembrance and the ashes of local ex-service personnel.
However, the site has fallen into disrepair following the loss of the Royal British Legion club to fire in 2017. The land is now owned by South Liverpool Homes and we plan to regenerate the South Parade area, which includes providing much-needed homes for generations to come.
Following extensive consultation and with the consent of families, a new home has been found for the memorial at nearby All Saint’s Church and a casket of earth representing those remembered will be moved to the church in a special ceremony.
A hearse will leave the former Royal British Legion site at 11.15am and travel west on Dam Wood Road, turning onto Western Avenue and heading north. The route will then follow Tewit Hall Road before turning onto Hale Road in the direction of the church, with the ceremony at the church due to take place at 11:50am.
Those invited to the ceremony are kindly asked to wear masks and abide by the current social distancing guidelines.
