Preparing for Storm Dennis

Published: 13 February 2020

After Storm Ciara brought bad weather last weekend, next weekend (15-16 February) will see more high winds and heavy rain when Storm Dennis hits South Liverpool.

According to the latest forecast, South Liverpool will see winds over 40mph and heavy rain on Saturday and Sunday, after which conditions are forecast to improve. Here’s how you can prepare for the poor weather and stay safe, help us deal with the extra emergency calls that we will receive, and learn more about the service you can expect from us.

Prepare your home for strong winds

Prevention is always better than cure so here are some top tips to help prevent injury and damage to you and your home.

  • Secure loose objects such as wheelie bins, garden furniture and trampolines to prevent them being blown around by the wind.
  • Keep doors and windows securely closed as much as possible.
  • Where possible park vehicles away from buildings, trees, high walls and fences.
  • Keep unnecessary travel to a minimum and keep indoors if possible.
  • Don’t touch any electrical cables that might have been blown down.
  • Don’t attempt to repair damage to your home while the storm is in progress.
  • Look out for vulnerable neighbours and make sure they’re safe.

Help us deal with emergency calls during the storm

During normal operating hours, our repairs service Avela Home Service take all emergency and non-emergency repair calls.

Outside of operating hours our out-of-hours service is in place to take emergency calls only. We’re putting extra staff in place for the weekend to cope with demand, but we also ask you to make sure you limit calls to emergencies only.

What is an emergency repair?

We class an emergency repair as something that will remove immediate danger to people or avoid major damage to your home. Examples include no power, no water or a water leak coming through your ceiling.

Reporting an emergency repair

To report an emergency repair call us on our usual number 0330 303 3000 and select the relevant option from the menu.

The service you can expect from us and our repairs service

During periods of extreme weather a lot of pressure is put on our out-of-hours call centre and our repairs service. So when things are busy please be patient when calling.  When we visit your home, we may only be able to make things safe and return to complete a permanent repair at a less busy time. And finally, during bad weather there are jobs that our repairs service can’t do while staying safe.
