Construction starts on South Liverpool Homes’ largest housing development in Speke

Work has started on a multi-million pound development which will provide much-needed family homes in Speke, South Liverpool.

119 two, three and four-bedroom homes, delivered by South Liverpool Homes (SLH) with funding from Homes England, will be built on a former school site on Greenway Road. The mixed tenure development, by house builder Keepmoat Homes, consists of 109 homes for affordable rent and 10 homes for rent to buy – a Government scheme which aims to ease the transition from renting to buying.

The development will be a first for South Liverpool Homes with the use of modular homes.  Using innovative technology, an initial four homes will be built off-site by ilke Homes, with the potential of a further 22 homes, before being transported to the Greenway development where they will be ready to move into in a matter of weeks. These sustainable homes have low running costs for tenants, typically costing 20% less to heat than traditional new builds and enabling South Liverpool Homes to meet the demands for homes in the area at a speedier rate.

An on-site event marked the occasion on Wednesday 16 January where key partners heard about the plans for the development from SLH and Keepmoat and got to see, first-hand, the rapid progress being made on site.

Julie Fadden, Chief Executive at SLH is excited about what this new development means for the area, she said: “The Greenway development is a major milestone in our ongoing commitment to meet the housing needs of future generations in South Liverpool. Not only is it our biggest single housing development in Speke, it will also see the first modular homes built for South Liverpool Homes and we will be very excited to see the homes handover in spring 2019.

“Creating training and employment opportunities is a given on a development of this scale and we are looking forward to working with Keepmoat Homes to create multi-skilled opportunities for the local community and developing much need skills for the industry.” continued Julie.

Gareth Roberts, Regional Managing Director at Keepmoat Homes, added: “We’re delighted to be working in partnership with South Liverpool Homes to deliver these new homes.

“We’re also pleased to be working with ilke Homes to bring modern methods of construction to this development, in the form of modular house building. This process complements the traditional building process enabling us to increase the pace of site delivery and accelerate the creation of new homes.”

Carl Moore, Head of Home Ownership and Supply at Homes England said: “It is wonderful to be working in partnership with South Liverpool Homes in funding a high-quality development, specially designed to meet the needs of local people.

“This partnership is an excellent example of Homes England helping communities and providing affordable housing using £4,145,000 from the Shared Ownership and Affordable Homes Programme. We look forward to continuing our work in the North West to deliver more affordable homes in the future.”

The new homes are expected to be completed by spring 2021 and are part of South Liverpool Homes’ plans to build over 240 new homes by 2021 for affordable rent, shared ownership and rent to buy across South Liverpool.
