SLH volunteer at Shoreline Clean-up event
Published: 3 June 2019
On Wednesday 29 May, South Liverpool Homes, Liverpool City Council, Peel Holdings L&P and Liverpool Sailing Club came together to take part in a shoreline clean up at the Speke and Garston Coastal Reserve. This was part of the national Plastic Pick Up campaign, which is organised each year by Keep Britain Tidy.
Local residents and volunteers from each of the organisations all helped to transform the 70-acre stretch of land that runs from Garston Docks to Speke Hall. They were on a mission to rid the reserve of plastic and help make it a place where local people could once again enjoy fresh air and nature on their doorsteps.
The volunteers were also joined by representatives from Merseyside Police, who were keen to get involved in the event. The volunteers met at Liverpool Sailing Club where they then split into groups to pick up plastic waste from different points across the shoreline. In just one afternoon, they managed to fill a whole skip with plastic litter which will be sorted and recycled.
Cathy Bennett, Neighbourhood and Community Safety Manager at South Liverpool Homes said:
“We had a great turn out today at the Shoreline clean up and lots of plastic collected as part of plastic clean up month. Thanks to everyone who came and got involved. We really made a difference and hopefully will alert others into thinking about what they dispose of on our shorelines and impact on our local wildlife and wider environment”.
If you’re a local resident in the Speke or Garston area, then why not come and join us on the next shoreline clean-up at Oglet shore in August? Any time you have to spare will help have a bigger impact on the shoreline, keeping it clean and safe for the local community to enjoy.
