Supporting people to remain independent in their homes
We have a number of services available to support and enable older and more vulnerable members of our community to remain independent and able to maintain their tenancies.
Tenancy Support Service
We have a Tenancy Support Service to help some of our more vulnerable tenants who may need extra help and support to help them live independently in their home. Maybe you’re a first time tenant who’s finding it difficult to manage your tenancy or maybe you have been in your home a while but are struggling to manage with day to day things due to a disability, health related issue or drug or alcohol abuse.
Here are some of things the service can help you with:
- Sort out any problems with managing your home and help you to keep it
- Deal with practical issues of setting up your home for the first time
- Refer you to specialist support agencies to give you the maximum support you need
- Work in partnership with our specialist teams to help you stay in your home

We want our tenants to be able to enjoy their homes but sometimes we understand that you and those that live with you might have difficulty using facilities in your home due to a disability or cultural need. This is why we have an adaptations service.
An adaptation is an alteration or addition to a home which is provided to make it easier and/or safer for you to use your home. An adaptation is provided based on a customer's need which could be caused through their age, disability or faith/cultural requirements.
We carry out two types of adaptations:
Minor adaptations are small non-technical repairs which cost less than £500 to complete. Examples of minor adaptations are grab rails, lever taps and repositioning of switches. No medical assessment is required for a minor adaptation. We store information about the age and disability of our customers making it easy for us to identify need when a minor adaptation is requested. Minor adaptations are carried out in the same way as day to day repairs and will be completed within 18 calendar days.
A major adaptation is larger scale works which cost over £500 to complete. They require a formal assessment from an Occupational Therapist. The Occupational Therapist will provide a report to us on what your needs are and advice on the type and level of works required.
Liverpool City Council provide an Occupational Therapist service which you can request by visiting your GP or by calling Careline on 0151 233 3800. Once we receive this Occupational Therapist assessment, we can then work with you to identify if your home is suitable for the adaptation required. We aim to complete major adaptations within six months of your enquiry. For more information about major adaptations, contact us.
Our independent living homes provide sheltered accommodation flats for people over 60, or 55 years with a disability. A Scheme Manager is on duty during office hours from Monday to Friday and a call centre provides emergency cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Advice for carers
Caring for a person with dementia can be both rewarding and challenging. The needs of the person may often come before your own and this can mean that you struggle to manage everything. However, it can be easier to cope if you look after yourself properly.
Alzheimer’s Society has produced a factsheet which explains why looking after yourself is important, the different types of needs that should be considered and where you can access support.
