Volunteering at South Liverpool Homes

Volunteer Academy

The Volunteer Academy is South Liverpool Homes’ training programme for people interested in volunteering. The programme, delivered in partnership with The Whitechapel Centre, The Reader and Merseytravel, helps you develop new skills so that you feel confident in applying for volunteer roles in the community. Volunteering is a great way to give something back to your local community. If you are seeking work, volunteering is a great way to improve your job prospects too.

Here are some of the things our Volunteer Academy can help you with:

  • Build your confidence
  • Gain new skills
  • Meet new people
  • Improve your job prospects
  • Gain valuable work experience
  • Make a positive difference to your community
  • Improve your health and wellbeing
  • Have fun

The academy will take place over six weeks for just a few hours per week at Parklands in Speke. Once you have completed the programme we will put you in touch with local organisations who are recruiting volunteers. Everyone who completes the course will receive a certificate of completion at the Volunteer Academy graduation ceremony.

The Market Place

The Market Place is a volunteer-run community shop in Speke which offers food and essential household goods to SLH tenants on a low income. The shop was set up by a small project team at South Liverpool Homes and is run solely by volunteers.

The project is about ‘more than just food’ - we also aim to make the shop a friendly, accessible venue where local people can find out about the range of services that SLH provides.

Roles include:

  • Controlling and managing stock levels
  • Serving in the shop and helping with queries
  • Receiving deliveries and stocking shelves
  • Keeping up to date with special promotions and putting up displays

Full details can be found here. If you can give up some time to help please contact South Liverpool Homes on 0330 303 3000 or email themarketplace@slhgroup.co.uk.

Grow Speke

Grow Speke is our community garden in Speke, delivered in partnership with Groundwork and with funding from Blackburne House and Merseyside Police's Community Cash Back Fund.

The community garden is situated in Speke on the former Boys’ Club site between Ganworth Road and Little Heath Road.

The site is currently under development and when completed will feature areas where local people can come and spend time, learn gardening skills, grow their own vegetables and much more.

But to succeed the project needs volunteers who are willing to give some time to develop and maintain the site. Volunteering at Grow Speke is a great way to make new friends, get some fresh air and exercise and give something back to the community.

Check out Grow Speke on Facebook where you can find out about the next volunteer days and get in touch for more information.
