June was introduced to Liz through South Liverpool Homes and she found the help and support that she received so useful she brought her friend Jackie along to the sessions.
June was working at Costa Coffee but was looking for something closer to home with more reliable hours while Jackie was a carer for her daughter and was looking to get back in to employment.
Liz from the Big Help Project delivers one-to-one sessions at Reach each Wednesday, but June and Jackie decided to come along together and give each other moral support. Both commented that they found the informal personal sessions really helpful as they felt like they would not be confident enough to attend group sessions with people that they did not know.
June said that she felt she was able to open up to Liz and tell her how she really felt because of this. Liz helped June and Jackie with interview techniques, to write a CV and also search for suitable jobs online. Both June and Jackie also said that this was a great help as they were not confident enough to use the computer on their own.
After applying for a role working as cleaners for Shop Direct, based in Speke, both June and Jackie found out that they had been successful. Talking about getting the job June said, “I felt great and really happy about it. I’m happy to have a bit more structure and there is also an opportunity to do overtime. It’s also near home so you could walk if you fancied it which is great”
Both June and Jackie are enjoying their new roles with June saying that she feels “much happier in the job that I’m doing now, and the beauty of it is that I am able to spend the weekend with my son so my new job fits around my family”.
As both June and Jackie now have set hours they are able to plan their time around their work to plan family commitments. They are also looking extra training and qualifications that they could complete to “do better for ourselves and continue building new skills” and look at qualifications that they could do in their spare time.
Talking about their time in Reach, they said that Liz always went out of her way to help in whatever way she could and she had really supported them learning new skills which led them to find employment. “It has really built my confidence. Liz has put us on the right path and really helped us.”
The Big Help Project deliver sessions from Reach every Wednesday from 9:00-12:00. To book an appointment with Liz or for more information please contact Laura on 0151 285 5604.
